ST. JOHN'S BREAD - St Johns Bread, also called Carob Bean, is originally from the Mediterranean and is still grown there today. It is believes that John The Baptist survived on the pods of this plant in the wilds, hence the origin of its name. St. John's Bread is commonly used in herbal medicines to ease digestion and help eliminate waste from the body. The pulp is a valuable sweetener and popular chocolate substitute, and the seeds have even been roasted as a coffee substitute. Tannin-rich St Johns Bread has been used successfully in the treatment of acute-onset diarrhea.
