What Are Free Radicals?
Every day you are constantly exposed to the harmful effects of free-radical damage in your body. Your body is comprised of billions of molecular cells held together by electronic bonds. When a molecule loses one of its electron pairs it becomes unstable... what we call a free-radical.
These free-radicals will try to replace their lost electron by attacking nearby healthy equal electron-paired molecules. As they attack, they transform healthy molecules into more free-radicals... this sets in motion a chain-reaction called oxidative stress which can damage a million or more adjacent molecules. This is nothing more than decay of otherwise healthy tissue!!
In our bodies this same oxidative force -- set in motion by free-radicals -- is thought to be responsible for premature aging, skin wrinkles and discoloration, hardening of the arteries, stiffening of the joints, arthritis, formation of eye cataracts, phlebitis, edema and leg swelling, diabetic retinopathy, stress-related conditions and increased susceptibility to cancers.
Unfortunately, we cannot avoid free radicals. Pollution, preservatives, heavy metals, UV radiation and stress all help to generate free-radicals. But we can lessen them and work to reverse damage already done so that free radicals do not continue to build in our bodies.
The vitamins C and E, are thought to protect the body against the destructive effects of free radicals. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, ending the electron-"stealing" reaction. The antioxidant nutrients themselves don’t become free radicals by donating an electron because they are stable in either form They act as scavengers, helping to prevent cell and tissue damage that could lead to cellular damage and disease.
Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable, or if the free-radical production becomes excessive, damage can occur. Of particular importance is that free radical damage accumulates with age.
The antioxidants are believed to help protect the body from free-radical damage, but before you go out and stock your pantry with mega-doses of these vitamins, be warned: more is not always better. The long-term effect of large doses of these nutrients has not been proven. It is safer to use a well balanced supplement and eat the recommended daily allowances of fruits and vegetables than to take large doses of Vitamins C and E.
Our product Ultimate Antioxidant contains over 90 nutrients, vitamins and anti-aging factors including: Vitamin E, Vitamin C, CoQ10, folic acid, green tea, zinc, selenium, and additional minerals designed to target cellular oxidation and meet daily nutritional needs.
